USGD 2002 Great Unclean One
This model was a serious labour of love. I started sculpting it when my finger was still sore, prior to my eye surgery. Due to the pain in my finger I had to go quite slow on the sculpt but in the end I had logged 40 hours building and sculpting the model. I didn't start painting the figure until 10 days before I was to leave for Baltimore. I took the week off of work because I knew I was going to need the time. I then spent 140+ hours painting the model in a period of 9 days. I was very careful of my finger, taking time to stretch and ice and I am still taking vitamin/mineral supplements to improve joint function. The model is absolutely huge, towering over the original demon and dwarfing even the fierce Blood Thirster. I wanted him to be the most menacing miniature and he sure fits the bill. I was not a big fan of his stumpy legs so I completely removed them in favour of integrating him directly to the base. I think that the this is one of the strongest points of the model, the unity between the figure and the base. As far as painting goes I wanted to try my hand at what I see as the 'French' style of painting. It is in a way similar to my own but different enough to be very challenging from a composition point of view. The style is abrupt and at the same time very cohesive. It is all about combining colours in ways that you would not normally consider and in the end achieving a unified look. In my opinion this is easiest with chaos, because of their ability to accept any colour scheme. In real life the purple is much more subdued but to bring out the detail in the model I had to brighten the pictures. Greens
