BATTLE GROUP KENAZ

BATTLE GROUP ALGIZ

BATTLE GROUP NAUTHIZ

BATTLE GROUP IZA

BATTLE GROUP TIWAZ
These six models were done in earth tones to emphasize their nature as scouts.  The combination of browns and greys with the dark green and black armour make these guys look brooding.  I added red swirls on their swords to signify blood without needing to splatter them with blood effects.  More pictures can be found here.

WOLF GUARD VIDAR
This is in my opinion the best Space Wolf model in the GW range.  He is now an archive figure although he rivals many newer models in detail and pose.  You can see that the powerfist fingers are red and this will be carried out through the rest of the many fists in the army.  More pictures can be found here.

WOLF GUARD TYR
This model was a real question mark up until I finished the head.  With the wideness of the brow it just didn't look good until he was done.  In the end it all looks to scale and makes him look brutish.  I realized after I had him sculpted and primed that Tyr, the Norse god of Justice is blind.  I decided to paint half his face with blue war paint to signify that and will also paint the Blood Claws in his squad similarly.  More pictures can be found here.

RUNE PRIEST FUTHARK
I really like the way the sculpt painted and the huge two handed axe really sets the model off.  The weapon needed to be different from Battle Leader Skoll since it is rune weapon.  This is why I painted rune like patterns on the blade and made lots of contrast at the edges.  It really helps to balance the darkness of his armour and to provide a counter point to the lightness of the pelt leather in his right side.  He, like Skoll, has NMM gold details that greatly brighten the model.  More pictures can be found here.

SPACE WOLF VEHICLES
This entry in the gallery is actually comprised of SIX different tanks; 3 Rhinos, a razorback, a predator destructor and a predator annihilator.  It also contains a speeder and a dreadnought.  They are part of a large army that I am creating.  I primarily used historical armour painting methods for the vehicles, airbrushing the plates to give depth and drybrushing the edge highlights.  Further airbrushing was done to weather them with grime and then they were detailed as normal with a brush.  More pictures can be found here.

WOLF GUARD BATTLE LEADER SKOLL HURGAN
This model is the leader for the Space Wolf army I am painting.  He was created in a fit of inspiration and I am very happy with the final look.  I painted him with the flaming orange hair of a young leader, black armour and lots of gold.  His axe is a frost blade and I felt that it would look perfect as a contrast to his darkness.  For this end I painted it a light aqua with 'frosty swirls'.  The base was done in a standard way for many of my models and will be the theme of the rest of the figures in the army.  More pictures can be found here.  Greens and WiP pictures can be found here.

EMPEROR vs HORUS DIORAMA
This was quite the project.  It was based on the last meeting between the Emperor of mankind and Horus the Warmaster of Chaos.  It is not an attempt to copy the amazing art found in such books as the Horus Heresy [great book BTW] but is an attempt to bring it to life in my own way.  All of us that know of the 40K universe know of the Horus Heresy.  At the climax of that event was the final meeting of the Emperor and has once champion Horus.  It is the great struggle between good and evil.  In this diorama Horus and his two champions confront the Emperor in his throne room with two of his Adeptus Custodes.
This project was not limited to the six figures you see here.  I also did 6 more that are copies of these but in different poses.  They are on round bases so they can be used for play.  Pictures of all the models with more dialogue can be found here.

COMMISSAR BRAND KAL BANATH
This model was a lot of fun to paint.  He is for the most part very dark as befits a commissar.  In many ways he is very washed out but I wanted him to look like he belonged in an =I= setting.  I went with a very recognizable paint scheme and I kept thinking of a WWII German submariner as I painted him.  I used many colours and most of them were darkened with black prior to base coating.  This helps to keep him to look dour and overly serious.  More pictures can be found here.

GAMESDAY MARINE
This model is a very tough to get marine leader that was given out at the 2000 GD.  The upraised power fist is about the best in the game and the tones of detail on this model make him look very cool.  The dramatic edge highlighting on the armour really make this scheme stand out.  More pictures can be found here.

EMPEROR'S CHAMPION
This is one of the most regal of the space marine models.  Quite simple in detail but overall look is amazing.  I really like this armour variant as well, lots of hard angles to hold highlights with.  He was done in the Crimson Fist scheme in a way to further explore the need for sharp edge highlighting.  More pictures can be found here.

LORD DANTE, COMMANDER of the BLOOD ANGELS
This model is a close approximation of the Dante model in the Blood Angels codex.  The actual armour in the codex is more reddish than mine but I have found it very challenging to copy an exact NMM effect.  I did use a different formula for this gold than normal, I worked through orange rather than the yellow brown I normally use.  I am very happy with the brightness of this gold and think that I will use it more often.  For the base I really liked the idea of him being poised for a jump or just landing from a jump.  I weighted the base and due to his position on the I beam he is very stable even though he is so elevated.  More pictures can be found here.

ARHIMAN, of the THOUSAND SONS
Another model with a super tight pallet [about 6 base colours less than I wanted to use. :)] and featuring very bright edge highlighting.  After all was said and done I really like the tight look of this model and the edge highlighting really makes the model stand out.  More pictures can be found here.

DRAZHAR, MASTER of BLADES
I have not painted this model in about five years and it is still just as cool now as it was then.  The sharp armour ridges make for great edge highlighting.  I wanted a dark model with a very tight pallet so I had a look in some old WD magazines and other reference sources.  I have been so obsessed with broad pallets dominated by blue/green pastels that I needed help breaking out of my rut.  This model is the first in a series that sees me return to an old style of model painting.  I really, and I mean really, like the brightness of this dark model.  It is bright in a way that I have not seen in quite some time.  More pictures can be found here.

SARDAR TILLIUS
I have always been impressed by the Lions line from Rackham.  Those tiny armour detail look so good and the figures usually show dynamic movement of cloth.  I wanted to deviate from my regular schemes and focus on making him bright with red being a focus colour.  I had toyed with applying object source lighting but decided to do him without.  I think that it shows much better not being illuminated.  More pictures can be found here.

ARKEON SANATH SCORIONS STANDARD BEARER
This is one of a pair of Sanath models I obtained a while ago.  I really liked the pose and felt that it would be perfect for a standard bearer.  The sculpt displays an arrogant casualness which works well for someone holding a standard.  He was painted in a dark scheme with many colour transitions that do not show that well in pictures.  His armour was done in a darker style than normal where I used turquoise/shadow grey and black as the base.  The turquoise made for a very nice subtle final colour since I worked the base colour all the way up to its brightest highlight.  More pictures can be found here.

GRIFFON HIGH GUARD
This unit of models is simply stunning and a real treat to paint.  The flowing cloth and the sense of menace either real or implied is what makes these models so cool.  I have been wanting to do a paint scheme like Eldrad for quite some time and thought that these would work nicely for that.  With the swords being the light source I was very happy with the way the light plays on the model.  It was also an interesting point that saw one of the models without lighting since his sword is sheathed.  This allows the viewer to actually see the non-lighted look which is unusual since lighting is usually an all or nothing effect.  Pictures of the back of the models show the rich red of the cloth, pattern work and NMM gold.

SQUIGOTH, TANK CRUSHA'
This was one of the most fun models I have painted in a long time.  The Orks in the 40K universe are a blast to paint and I tried to stick to their traditional look on this model.  From a painting point of view the metals were very time consuming for me since I am only now developing my skill in painting real metallics.  The metal layers and ink glazes were repeated many time until I was satisfied with the look.  It is quite a bit harder for me to do metallics than NMM but I can see where I need to go and think that metallics look very appropriate on this model.  I must thank Jacob Nielson for his tips on painting metallics.  While I have a long way to go to catch up to his masterful skill his advice was priceless.  More pictures can be found here.

EMPEROR'S CHAMPION STATUE
A friend of mine asked me about two years ago to do a statue like I did for my 2001 GD entry but with the new champion model.  Well, I finally got around to painting the model that has been on my desk for over a year.  It is not the same as the one from 2001 but the idea is the same.  I really like the way the blues turned out and then once I went back and counter highlighted with a soft green I knew I had the final product captured.  More pictures can be found here.

ELEMENTAL of DARKNESS
This model was purchased on my return trip from GD Toronto.  I do not believe that I have ever seen a painted one on the net and really liked the way it looked in the blister.  I painted him up for our D&D game and will use him as an adversary for the party.  I did lots of full colour transitions for the model and feel that I was able to capture the evil and the chaotic nature of his being.  One of the best demon models I have ever painted.  I really wish they would put out a bigger demon at some point.  More pictures can be found here.

UMRAN KAL
This model was a blast to paint.  All the large armour panels made for lots of areas for patterns.  I added a grey/red to the armour plates to give them depth that does not show up in the photos.  But in real life it is very evident.  I decided to do the brontops in a darker scheme than what Rackham did to give the model a darker more brooding feel.  More pics can be seen here.

KARL FRANZ, EMPEROR of MANKIND
This model turned out great.  While it is obvious that this is one of the older character sculpts left in the GW range it is still pretty solid.  The griffon provides a great sense of movement to the regal, albiet 2D figure of Karl Franz.  The free hand brocade on the banner really makes the model look like the emperor that he is.  More pictures can be seen here.

WOLFEN HUNTER
This model was done with very similar flesh tones as the VPC wolfen I did a month or so ago.  I really like the understated look it gives to the flesh, allowing all the accessories to stand out.  I decided to accentuate his fierce face by painting it in red war paint.  More pics can be seen here.

SERED, TEMPLAR COMMANDER
This is the second time I have painted this model and the difference in final product is pretty profound.  I started this model desiring to have a tight colour scheme and ended up with one of the most varied models I have ever done.  While the pallet is complex I feel that it all works well together due the partitioning of the model.  I had tonnes of fun with the patterning and the new blends and highlights.  More pictures can be found here.

SISTER of BATTLE CANONESSE
The entire line of new SoB models from GW are fantastic.  This model has so many weapon and wargear options that I was torn as to which way to go for at least an hour.  The dramatic pose works well with all possible options and really makes this model stand out.  She also follows in line with St Celestine in overall detail.  GW has really upped the ante with the level of detail they are including in their models.  Not too much as to be over the top but just enough IMHO to accentuate the character.  More pictures can be found here.

LOUEN the LIONHEART, KING OF BRETONNIA
This model was done in a similar scheme to the one used by GW since I wanted him to be easily recognized as the king.  The major difference is the quartering of the caparacon [correct spelling, minus the squiggle under the 'c' provided by an avid watcher, thanks] into gold and blue on the left and gold and red on the right.  I really like this as it gave me a tonne of options for patterning.  More pictures can be found here.

St CELESTINE, the Living Saint
What a great model.  The pose, the sculpted details, everything is perfect about this model.  I went with a rose armour since I wanted to see a more feminine look.  This combined with the turquoise details and the gold trim really make the model stand out.  I decided early on to keep the back cape dark and free of details.  This decision turned out to be very good since the cape now acts as a frame for this model without taking away from the grandure of the model.  More pictures can be seen here.

INQUISITOR DARIUS
This model is guite a deviation for me, in that I used metallic paints.  I followed some advice given by a few European GD winners to make the metal look more real.  While I am happy with the final product esp. the way the added parts look I found that NMM is just so much more enjoyable to paint.  Possibly because I have focused so much on NMM at the expense of my skill with metallics, however I feel that it because my style is more cartoony than real.  I did enjoy the challenge of the washes and glazes and layering and blending and re-glazing and so on for the metallics.  A lot more work goes into it than is obvious at first glance.  More pictures can be found here.

CHAOS BEAST GIANT OF SLAANESH
This massive model has been a real treat to paint.  He is so big that I decided to take some WiP pics during the painting process.  More pics and a description of what I did can be found here.

PHYTHIA of AZEL
This model is a very fine model, in fact she is deceptively small in stature.  She is an experiment in sheer clothing and iridescent [non angular] armour.  I had my doubts while painting her that the end product would look solid when done but in the end she is a great success.  She is very colourful but not in a way that is over the top.  The iridescent look of the armour turned out to be very striking in real life especially when framed by the NMM gold of the trim.  More pictures can be found here.

SHAKA ORC WARLORD
This model sees me use about every colour I have at one point or another.  His scheme is still pretty tight but to have the variety of shade that one would expect with so much stuff I needed a lot of colours.  Not really sure how an orc would scar but I felt that the pink/purple scars showed up the best.  I also felt that the two war paint swirls on his chest and side were necessary once the skin was done.  Odd that I should feel it needed more detail since I felt the model was already too complex.  However, I felt this was needed to round out the savage character that the model represents.  I also used many different kinds of NMM for this model.  The orc range from Rackham has many different tones and bases to their metal and I wanted to try that out.  I think that it has real merit on onther pieces I will do in the future.  More pictures can be found here.

ONYX
Well I finally got around to doing this fantastic model.  I think he was one of the first Confrontation models I saw on the net and he remains one of my favorites.  The grey highlights were achieved by simply adding white to black in 10+ blends.  I wanted his base to have a sense of movement that accentuated his own pose and decided on a waterfall.  It is my first attempt at water done in this way and I am pretty happy with it.  More pictures can be found here.

VPC GRAVE GUARDIAN
This model was done in a more natural/subtle scheme with loads of earth tones.  I still did NMM but for the most part it is a softer more natural looking model.  The idea behind the base was he was stepping into a rising surf to defend his burial site.  Most of the earth tones were achieved by mixing a few colours in different ways yielding many final shades.  More pictures can be found here.
