SPACE WOLF ARMY

Wolf Guard Battle Leader Skoll Hurgan

GREENS:
This model was a spontaneous, on the fly concept.  I like the idea of a larger than normal marine leading an army especially if it can be worked into a story [the story is to follow].  It is a fair amount of work to increase the size of a marine.  Certain parts must stay the same and this is the limiting factor as to how large you can go.  Things like the head, hands and feet stipulate the maximum potential for growth.  Lucky for me the heads for GW models are already not to scale.  They are on the large side for most model.  This is not really that noticeable since it is not like the heads are 'way' out.  Just a tad to emphasize the facial features.  I was planning on giving Skoll a beard and this helps to increase the relative size of his head.  It lengthens the face providing the needed change for it to work at a 50% increase.  Space marine feet are damn large to begin with so they were not a problem.  I used standard hands, and while they do appear to be a bit on the small side especially for such a large guy they don't look out of place.  Again, the hands that GW uses are out of scale on the large side, so that helped.
I used standard legs, Space Wolf torso, chaos space marine chain mail loin covering, Space Wolf knives, wolf tails, 2 icons from the Forgeworld icon pack, chaos plasma gun, dire wolf head, top knot from a space ork, a chaos troll's axe and the 2 wolf skull icons from the Ulrik models crozarius.
The base is done except for the addition of snow once it is primed and painted.

As you can see from this size comparison Skoll is a giant of a man.  I propped up the scout so that he is the same height as Skoll as he stands atop the rocks he is perched on.

WiP PICTURES:
These shots show the progression of how a model comes to life under my brush.  I rarely have a predetermined plan, I just do what feels best at the time.

Set 1:

This early set of shots show that the face, hair, pelts and wolf head are done.  The reds of the dagger sheathes and wolf belt are also done.  The golds were darkly based with Bestial Brown [GW] and Dark Grey [994].  This gives me the option of having darker final golds although I am still unsure if the golds will end up dark or bright.

Set 2:

As you can see I can cover a fair bit of ground between stages.  The highlights of the black armour are done but due to the intermediate varnish coat it is washed out.  The axe blade is done as is most of the plasma pistol.  I almost redid the axe after the first layer of pattern since I just didn't like it.  Like most things however I persevered and in the end I am very happy I didn't scratch it.

Set 3:

In these shots you can see that I have put down the major coat for the golds [100% Bestial Brown (Citadel Paints)].  I have also done all the light greys as well as the minimal amount of silver NMM.  I felt that the weapon would look better with grey/white skulls and that is why the base gold is not carried through.  Just another way in which painting develops as the model takes shape.

Set 4-6:

These three shots show the progression in the NMM golds.  From stage 3 to 4 there were three layers of increasing amounts of Leprous Brown (Citadel Paints) added to the base of Bestial Brown.  In stage 4 the build is up to 100% Leprous Brown.  I then added increasing amounts of Skull White (Citadel Paints) to get the final gold in Set 7 Below.  There were two layers between stage 4 and 5, and three layers between stages 5 and 6.  There was only one layer between stages 6 and 7 below.

Set 7:

These shots show the finished model except for the base.  The reason why the base was done last is so that I did not rub it off while painting the model.  The base will be pretty light and will make a nice contrast for the darkness of Skoll.

FINISHED PICTURES:

WOLF GUARD BATTLE LEADER SKOLL HURGAN
This model is the leader for the Space Wolf army I am painting.  He was created in a fit of inspiration and I am very happy with the final look.  I painted him with the flaming orange hair of a young leader, black armour and lots of gold.  His axe is a frost blade and I felt that it would look perfect as a contrast to his darkness.  For this end I painted it a light aqua with 'frosty swirls'.  The base was done in a standard way for many of my models and will be the theme of the rest of the figures in the army.  More pictures can be found here.
