Built Inquisitor Grey Knight Terminator
This
is another Inquisitor figure that I just finished sculpting. It is, yup
you guessed it, a terminator, and not any terminator but a Grey Knight.
Inspired from pictures in the North American White Dwarf 259 and a comment by
Jervis Johnson. Jervis said the design team couldn't see terminators in
Inquisitor as they don't fit the theme. I was shocked since I have many
40K inquisitor figures and they are ALL in terminator armour. The Grey Knights,
as demon hunters, have a solid place in the Inquisitor story and game. The
figure is sculpted to scale in that the torso is the correct height and the arms
are the correct length. However, I have always been of the opinion that
terminators are WAY too small so I decided to make mine taller. I figure
that with the size of the shin guards his feet can articulate inside them
leaving the armoured feet to mimic the movement.
Since I posted the pictures of the Grey Knight I
received many comments that the hands were just too small. I decided that
since so many people were of this opinion that I would add full sized gauntlets
to the figure. This leaves the head as the only part that emphasizes the
sheer size of the terminator armour. No pics of the new hands as I am now
into painting him and didn't get any greens of the new gauntlets.
Like
I said in Gallery III this figure was inspired by the pictures in WD 259.
The lettered prayers on the shoulders, right elbow and right forearm match those
seen in the picture. The Grey Knight terminators have large raised rims on
the top most section of the shoulder and this just makes the shoulders really
stand out. For game purposes I decided to focus his demon killing
abilities by adding a psycannon into his left forearm. The tabard I added
[for some colour when I paint him] was going to cover the prayer book they all
carry so I decided to add it to the chain around his neck. I opted out of
the Ageis suit cap because I want the contrast of the bald head against the
black/grey armour. The hands are gauntleted space marine hands and while
they might look small I just couldn't make them bigger. This is because a
gauntlet can only be so big and still be usable. The halberd is green
stuff around the wire I use for armatures and the blade is a piece of 3mm
plastic card I ground to give it the shape I wanted.
From
the back the terminator looks very much like a real 40K terminator with a couple
of differences. The top back armour section is narrower allowing for a
more recognizable contour. The shoulders really seem to stand out the way
I sculpted the back. The power exhaust vents are a bit different but this
was purely done for ease of sculpting. The rivets are added to give some
detail to the back without making it too complex. You can see that the
power cables are all exactly as they look on the 40K terminator
model.
The base has his name, 'Octavius' etched in the
stones encircling the base. The inside portion has the same character
pattern as seen on his shoulders and right forearm. The center of the base
is left plain so I can paint the chapter symbol for the Grey Knights on
it. My vision is he is either standing on his armour suit-up pad or is
just stepping onto a teleportation disc. For those of you that are curious
the base is 70mm.
From
the left side you can see the storm shield I added for extra protection against
those big demons. It is also the best angle for observing the skull on the
left shoulder. The skull is one of the Forge World resin skulls and the
shield is actually a Bulldog Buckle. Little details like actual words on
the feet, the word, 'Mortus' on the lower shin and the skull on the knee brace
make for a believable figure.
From
the right side you can see the chapter badge on the right shoulder. The
book with a sword through it, while not significant, adds another characterful
detail. The second insertion of the halberd can be seen in the right
leg. This will make the permanent addition of the weapon to the figure
much strong. The writing on the knee says, 'Corpus Fides' the writing on
the lower shin says, 'Demonicus', and the writing on the foot says, 'In nominee
deus'.
Onto
the Painted Piece.
