ECLIPSANT
This model was done for the CCIV. As you can see I worked a lot on the
composition of the model posing her on a base that is as tall as she is.
This might be seen as excessive, and yet, for this model the over all effect is
striking. Her dance pose, standing on one leg, maintains the slender
appearance of the column. I did a very light aqua blue NMM for the blade
that I was happy with. The column was done to look like rose marble and
the creeper vines and ruined stone work of the base give it a very old look.

GRIFFON
WARBAND
This band was designed around a Sleepy Hallow theme. So, most of the
models have sweeping cloaks with an emphasis on fabric vs armour. In
keeping with the Sleepy Hallow theme the models were kept dark with deep shadows
and more subtle highlights. They are based in many different styles with
the over all theme being that of a graveyard. Many more pictures can
thoughts can be found here.
SPACE
MARINE CHAPLAIN
This model was based on the limited Christmas Marine from a few years ago.
The power axe head was swapped out for a crozius and a plasma pistol was placed
in this off hand. He is based on a Forge World resin base to fit in with
the army has painted to lead. He has bright NMM golds, blended greys and
aquamarine blue to lighten him up since he is a fairly dark model. Both
purples were taken to Space Wolf Grey for their final highlight giving them
dynamic lighting. His left shoulder was painted with an eagle in NMM gold
as a symbol of his chapter. More pictures can be found
here.
LORD
of CHANGE, GREATER DEMON of TZEENCH
This model was a serious undertaking from a design point of view. I had
decided early on in the sculpting and build of this model that he would feature
a lighting effect. I had wanted to do two effect originally but in the end
I decided that it would have looked too cluttered. So, I kept the spell
effect, washing the right side of his body in eerie blue green light and dropped
the lava lighting effect. The hint at the hot colours in the lava cracks
balances the cool colours used on the model very well. The horrors were a
treat to paint since I have, for some reason, never painted them before.

BLOOD
DRAGON VAMPIRE
This model was done to be the foot version of the mounted battle standard bearer
below [minus the standard]. As you can see the model is painted exactly
the same so it is easy to transpose the anti hero from a mounted unit to a foot
unit. The sword was swapped out for the blade from the =I= Eldar scout.
This makes his cutlass look way more impressive. More pictures can be
found here.
BLOOD
DRAGON VAMPIRE BATTLE STANDARD BEARER
This model has got to be one of my most recent favorites. The raised
detail of the dragon on the banner, the red armour and barding combined with the
pose on the base make the model very dramatic. The red armour took a fair
bit of time with approx 10 layers of red highlights to the edges and 4 layers of
orange/red to the center of plates. This gives the armour real depth.
While the model is bright it also manages to maintain a sense of depth and
darkness as befits a vampire lord. More pictures can be found
here.
ULTRMARINE
COMMANDER ROMULUS [BEARER of THE GAVEL of JUDGMENT]
This model is a deceptive conversion. At first it looks like a weapon swap
but upon closer inspection it can be seen that some grinding was involved and a
fair bit of putty work. The central housing on the chest was removed and
replaced with the characteristic 'U'. I then covered all the runes on the
armour since they are the hallmark of the grey knights. Lastly I added a
large 'U' to the left shoulder. The green marble of the base really off
sets the blue in the armour making the model look more regal. More
pictures can be found here.
DARK
ELF BATTLE STANDARD BEARER
This model is one of my favorites. I have now done it three times, the
most of any single figure I have ever painted. This particular model has a
large sculpted banner with twisted souls screaming forth from the arcane cloth.
The paint scheme is crisp and dark with only just enough colour to give good
contrast. More pictures can be found
here.
ELDAR HARLEQUIN
This model was as much to paint as it was to build. The red and yellow
diamonds work so well with the other colours chosen, much to my surprise.
I was going for lots of solid blocks of colours and I think I hit all the
primary colours to some degree or another. The major difference between a
40K scale harlequin and this model is that I was able to effectively
pattern some of the blocks of colours. This makes the model seem more real
and at the same time more garish. The base was painted in the same south
west motif I have used on other models. More pictures can be found
here.
ESCHER GANG HOUSE LEADER
The Escher gang models for Necromunda have always been appealing to me.
The ability to use gaudy colours together is very foreign but with these models
it is expected. I had a lot of fun combining the orange, purple and
turquoise on this model into a cohesive scheme. As for wargear, she is
kitted right out with a boltgun and a grenade launcher. More pictures can
be found here.
DARK
EMISSARY
This model is a highly converted Halberdier of Dirz. I have used the staff
end from a chaos sorcerer, the head from the chaos mutation sprue and skulls
from the chaos vehicle accessory sprue. These additions combined with the
sculpted detail I added [scroll standard, hanging rune cloth, loin tabard, arm
bandages, cloaks] create a unique and ominous Dark Emissary. The base sees
three different types of terrain, combined for a realistic effect. I used
dark base colours, shaded with purples and brought up with yellows. This
creates a dirty yet sharp paint scheme that makes the model look almost real.
More pictures can be found here.
HIRH-KARN, The ENRAGED
This model is just crazy. Confrontation dwarves have got to be the most
unique looking dwarves in any range. Their huge heads make them look very
cartoony. This huge head also provides the painter with a great surface
for doing good facial work. I used a new paint blend for the skin tone
since regular flesh tones just didn't seem to be appropriate. The face was
based in Dark Grey and Shadow Grey and then worked up with Flat Yellow and Elf
Flesh. The tone created suits the dwarf perfectly. The rocks see me
use the Smoke colour again, works great for rocks. More pictures can be
found here.
GREY KNIGHT LORD QUINTUS, KEEPER of THE LIBRE et MORTIS
This model was painted in a similar scheme to the other Grey Knights in Gallery
V. The grey armour really stands out, creating a glowing finish while
maintaining the darkness of the Grey Knights. The model is very converted,
to create a unique Grey Knight character. The book in his hand is the tome
that contains the roll of worlds put to the sword in the name of the Emperor,
the Libre et Mortis. I painted the base to be highly polished green marble
using a similar [yet better] scheme as I did for Asmodai in the 2003 Golden
Demon Gallery. More Pictures can be found
here.
MASTER of CARNAGE
Another brilliant model from Rackham. The style that has been stressed in
the relatively simple sculpt is fantastic. He looks like he is stalking
his opponent without any thought as to his own safety. This sense of
confidence is what drew me to the model in the first place. I painted him
standing atop two rocks that are amid a glowing green liquid. I used the
liquid as a source of light for the model giving him a strong under glow.
Due to the pose I was able to justify leaving his outer arms un-illuminated.
This allowed me to emphasize the nature of the source of light. This More
pictures of the model can be found here.
RAGNAR
BLACKMANE
This
model was done to represent Ragnar Blackmane since the current model is
tragically 2D. I based the figure on the new Rune Priest with some subtle
but major changes. The right arm was completely removed so I could pose
the pistol better and so I could use the wolf skull shoulder. His sword
was made from 2 chain swords so that it is a truly massive weapon. I felt
that the amount of hair on the original model was not sufficient for Ragnar so I
sculpted more hair, giving him a full black mane. The base was painted
using Vallejo Smoke and Flat Yellow for a natural rock look. Originally I
had not liked smoke since it was so granular and thick but now that I am more
comfortable using Vallejo it is a great colour. More pictures can be found
here.
2002 GAMESDAY CHAOS CHAMPION
I
have had this model for over a year now and I am very glad I waited to paint it.
I only just discovered a way to achieve bright reds without using orange or
yellow. This means the models armour could be bright red without looking
washed out. I wanted this figure to jump out at you and so the golds are
also very bright. I painted the axe with a purple base and then added red
and grey to the purple to achieve the final look. The elf was painted
brightly and in a woodland scheme since he looks like a wood elf glade rider.
More pictures can be found here.
This
model is another example of object source lighting. The head of the
necromancers axe is glowing with the sickly power of death. I based him on
a pile of skulls [from GW] to further emphasize his affinity for the dead.
The skulls of the base were painted in a monotone grey to prevent the base from
becoming a focal point. I chose to do this model in earth tones but with a
tricolour highlight/shadow on the robe and cloak. The shadow work with
purple turned out very well, providing a sense of decay to the figure.
While the glow of the axe will obviously attract your eye the little familiars
were done to be stabs of brightness in an otherwise dark model. More
pictures can be found here.
The
Griffon line in the Confrontation game is probably my favorite. The style
of these models is exactly what I look for in a figure. The Iron Priestess
is no exception, her sense of foreboding power is obvious from her sculpt.
This model is bright, which is more in line with my normal style but the colours
I chose are very different. The rose armour was done in a sky-earth style
with the primary light source being from the right. I also used a light
azure blue for the armour details with the symbol on her head being done in the
sky-earth technique. The purple, while dark, is highlighted to look like
light lively fabric. More pictures can be seen
here.
This
model was quite a departure for me in style. Other than the highlighting
of the greenish armour this model is done in very muted natural colours. I
find it curious to try to emulate the style of the staff painters for Rackham,
it sees me using very interesting highlights and counter shadows. The
reason I went with a muted scheme is that this faction in the Rackham world are
from a dark culture of torture, drugs and death. The scheme really works
on this figure and the highlights used really bring out the detail of the model.
The only bright part on the model is the lenses of his glasses. I
wanted them to be peering out of the darkness of the model and I feel I achieved
this with the bright primary colour. More pictures can be seen
here.
Seemingly
this model is the same base as the model I did with the lighting effect on the
sword. I guess I really like the implied motion since I was drawn to this
model as soon as I saw it. It is a bit of an odd model in that most of the
detail is on the back of the figure. This gives the front a simple clean
look that is not cluttered like so many models. I really like the overcoat
he is wearing, not at all the kind of thing I would expect on an armoured figure
but very cool none the less. I did the highlighting on the purple with
vermillion and the grey with the red from the cloak. This continues my
study of highlighting with colours I would not normally use to achieve more
realistic fabric tones. More pics can be found
here.
This
dwarf model is one of the best I have ever seen. In fact, this model and
the female dwarf from Chainmail are tied in my opinion as the best dwarves.
This model is so full of character and power that it basically painted itself.
The hammer he is wielding was painted to look like it has internal heat.
This ties in with the anvil he has on his back, a walking forge so to speak.
You will notice that I did his armour with metal paint [gasp ;)]. IMHO,
metal paint always has a place and I wanted his armour to look very shiny so for
me this was a good choice. More pics can be found
here.
I
originally purchased this model so I could use the arm holding the demon head
for my 40K single entry at Baltimore. However, I really enjoy painting =I=
models and it was only a matter of time before I painted her. I completely
resculpted the right arm and both hands as well as sculpted the loin cloth as
well. I added a haute guard to her left shoulder and sculpted little scull
icons on the ridge of the guard. The force sword is from the =I= weapon
pack and makes a great weapon for her. The icon over her head is from the
Forge World =I= icon/door pack for the flying imperial transport.
She has been painted with greys highlighted with rose, greens highlighted with
aqua and NMM gold. Her sword was done as chrome metal and her hair was
painted in a light rose brought up to white. I feel I succeeded in making
her look very anime while maintaining her dark =I= feel. More pics can be
found here.
Originally
I was not that excited to get this model for GD. It was posed like so many
of the characters, in 2D. I was looking through my =I= bitz and found the
power hammer and this was all it took for me to get excited about the model.
I liked the idea of the hammer being slung over his shoulder ready to pound
anything that comes within arms reach. The base I sculpted really
accentuates his leg pose making him look like he really belongs on the two
levels of rock. More pics can be found here.
I
saw this model while I was at Clinton War in the beginning of August. It
was given as a present to our leader and I knew that it was going to be high on
my painting list. In fact, I bumped it into my schedule months ahead of
any opening. I did a few things to the model that really make him stand
out. The first was the addition of a larger axe head, from the =I= weapon
pack. This makes the axe look so much more lethal. The other thing I
did was give the model a storm hammer. I decided to make the hammer long
hafted so that it projected out from the model, making it look even bigger than
normal. More pics can be found here.
This
has got to be the largest vehicle I have ever painted. The model is just
huge! I went with a realistic desert warfare scheme that turned out very
well. Each panel is worn and has internal plate highlights just like a
historical model. The only bit of metal paint was on the hydraulics of the
landing gear under the wings. The rest is done in a flat grey so as to not
reflect light. The cockpit is painted with great care and detail,
unfortunately I didn't take pics prior to inserting it into the hull. The
model comes with a display base, seen here and a round Plexiglas base for play.
The display base was done to a historical standard and looks like a real bombed
out section of road. More pics can be found
here.
This
eerie model deserved to be painted under the light of the moon. I can just
imagine him jumping from tomb stone to stone seeking the evil that roams
graveyards. Rather than paint the light in only greys I added yellow to
the mix and really like the effect. This model is quite evil looking for a
good model and that is what I tried to accentuate with the paint work. His
face is only highlighted with grey paint to make it look very dark under the rim
of the hat. Of course I did the glasses he wears so that they leer out of
the darkness of his face. More pics can be found
here.
This
model represents my character, Eldrad. He is a paladin of Helm [Forgotten
Realms god] and has undergone a number of changes since he was last painted by
Darcy Schiller [see Guest Gallery]. This
model was a total experiment in colour and lighting. He turned out very
well and is bright, even for me. His sword glows with the holy light of a
holy avenger and his shield glows with the divine protection of his god.
The model is Confrontation with Glade Rider wings [from GW] and a sculpted cloak
to tie it together. More pics can be found
here.
This
model is very thin. It was fun to paint the sword flame effect but I might
have liked the model to be larger so I could have done larger glow areas.
Those familiar with the model will notice that I painted the entire model in
armour vs. the open areas left for skin. This is because the character is
in dragon full plate and there are just no gaps in full plate. The shield
does not match since it was acquired separately from the armour and is made from
completely different material. The long sword is painted with flame since
the sword the character wields is flaming. More pics can be found
here.
This
has got to be one of the best kits form Forge World I have ever seen. The
detail is stunning and it is just so rotten! Of course I am very partial
to Nurgle and just found this kit to be so perfect. I decided to alter the
base and thus the pose to make the model look more dynamic. I also decided
to do center weight highlighting balanced with edge highlighting. This
allowed me to more effectively do three base colours and then blend them into
one final product. I really like the way the brown/green highlighted with
purple turned out, very rotten. While the model is colourful and has a
diverse pallet it looks cohesive in a way only a Nurgle model can. More
pics can be found here.
This
massive model was a long time in the making. I ordered the Tyranid Spires
from Forge World some 4 months back. I then had it built and sculpted on
my table for months before I finally laid down paint. I wanted it to look
like the tyrant was looking around the spire about to attack someone on the
other side. I did the spire in very natural tones ending the blends far
from white to make it look more real. I also kept the red of the talons
and carapace subtle to allow the blue of the skin and wings to stand out.
More pics can be found here.
This
model has been in my 'to do box' for 2 years. I wanted to go with the
natural colours and realistic highlights vs the harsh highlights GW uses most of
the time. The flesh was done with a base of Vallejo Red Black and then
brought up with Blood Red and Ochre Brown. The pattern on the sword was
done with grey and yellow in a number of mixed blends. More pics can be
seen here.
I
have been intrigued with this model since I saw the original one in the Female
Painting Challenge a few years back. It was painted so well and was one of
the first times I had seen a Confrontation figure. Even then I knew I
wanted to paint her. Then they released a new version and I liked it so
much better. She looks so damn good and her horse is very regal looking.
The gold filigree of the armour and barding looks very good but it is a pain in
the butt to paint IMHO [lots of edge painting]. The internal armour
highlights combined with the gold NMM and the gray dapple horse make a great
final package. More pics can be found here.
Asgarh,
pack leader is a very imposing model. I guess all the Wolfen are imposing
but this guy seems to personify the savagery of the race. IMHO his weapons
are too big [I never thought I'd say that] but he still looks good. The
crescent moon icon on his back is very cool and from a story line point of view
is a fantastic detail. I reposed the model to be standing on a stone in
running water. This pose makes it look as though he is ready to lunge at
the enemy. I painted red war paint on his face and swirled patterns on his
arms. I think this just adds to the savagery of the model. More pics
can be found here.
The three devourers were a real treat to paint. Other than
getting over the huge gorget I loved painting these models. The continued
sense of style that the Rackham sculptors put into their models is amazing.
These models, like most Confrontation figs seemingly paint themselves.
More pics of all three can be found here.
This
was a labour of love. I took my time on this amazing model, lavishing it
with all kinds of details and subtle tones. It was a real learning
experience. My idea behind the rocky outcropping over the lava was one of
testing. The rocks are covered with Barbarian runes and this is the place
where potential chiefs must go to prove their worth. More pics can be
found here.
Green...how
many shades of green can there be? Lots! :) This model is comprised
of over 10 shades of green giving him a unified rotten look while maintaining a
clean scheme. There are some little modifications to the figure to
emphasize the Nurgle look but to me it all came down to the painting. I
used mostly Vallejo paints on this one since I really like there natural
tones. It was my first time using their airbrush line of paints with my
paint brush. More pics can be found here.
This
was an interesting conversion proposed by a client. It is the body of the
Templar Commander from Confrontation, Kohril's head from GW and the new sword
from Prince Tyrion. At first I was skeptical since GW heads are much
larger than those on most Confrontation models. This is true of this model
as well but the body is so long in this case that it looks perfect for an elf,
tall and lean. More pics can be found here.
A
friend e-mailed me and said he was in dire need of three snipers and would I be
able to help. I had a heap of models on my table waiting in line but I
figured snipers would be cool. I used the sniper from Col. Schafer's Last
Chancers and then did two total conversions for the other two. They are
based on the storm trooper models and worked out well. I did an urban
SWAT/special ops paint scheme and they should definitely get the attention of
anyone my friend plays. More pics and a run through on the conversions can
be found here.
