1998
and 1999 saw a huge focus in conversions for me. I had always done a
bit of this or a bit of that to a figure but now I was creating entire
models from bitz. I also became fascinated with scenic diorama style
bases.
From a painting standpoint I discovered a
form of drybrush blending. I also became more proficient with
expanding my colour pallet on models. My huge focus in 1999 was my
tyranid army and it was here that I discovered 'bulk' painting.

I
1998-2000

Another of
my chaos conversions to add ogres to my chaos warriors army. This is
one of my first digital pictures and is of my Ogre lord and his
unit. His unit consists of 11 other ogres, all converted to be
wielding two-handed weapons. Many more pictures can be found here.
This figure, and in fact the entire
Seattle 2000 GT army, is where I can see some of my most significant
improvements. It is at this stage in late '99 that I was discovering
blending and smoother highlights.
In
my Seattle GT army I had three carnifexs that terrorized opponents.
They were all converted to some degree or another with this one being the
most converted of the lot. I did a lot of unblended line highlights
for the skin of this creature for a sharp look on a gaming table. I
wish I had a better picture but I no longer have this army so this 35mm
shot will have to do.
This is another model from the army
I took to Seattle. It is the first of 24 ripper bases and I was
really trying to emphasize the savage nature of my force. I was able
to accomplish quite a bit with drybrush blending, a technique I rarely use
now.
These
marauders are part of my chaos warrior army. I did them in an
evening for a local WHFB tournament. The release of plastic
marauders was confirmed at Gamesday and I am very excited about
that. Since I did these figures I have moved away from such sharp
muscle lines in favour of a more natural look.
During this period I was drawn to the amazing
figures of the Eldar Phoenix Lords.
They are some of the most amazing figures in the GW range and I really
enjoyed painting them.
This
model was made for a Rogue Trader Tournamnet where WYSIWYG [what you see
is what you get] was strictly enforced. The
war gear is from the last edition of WHFB and include a Frostbalde and a
Helm of Many Eyes. The bronze of the armour is not standard for my
army but did act as a good focal point for the chaos knights he rides
with.
