2003 Archived History

December 14 2003
It has been quite a while since the last update...it is not as though I have been slacking however.  I have added a Griffon warband for Confrontation to Gallery V.  These 10 models have taken up most of my time since I last updated.  I am very happy with the overall look of the band as they look fantastic together on the table.  I did two conversions where I was able to add object lighting to the models.  The lighting is more subtle than I have done in the past to reflect lighting at midday.

November 28 2003
I have completed the paint work on the Lord of Change I added to the Sculpting Gallery last week.  It was a very long paint due in part to the size and also to the area of the lighting effect.  This model can be found in both the Illumination Gallery and Gallery V.   I have also added a space marine chaplain converted from the Christmas marine to Gallery V.
I also purchased a rotating paint holder that Jen Haley suggested over a year ago.  I am so happy that I finally have it that I can only wish I would have taken her advice long ago.  It holds all my paint that I currently use in 4 layers that rotate for easy access.  It takes up so much less room and eliminates paint pot clutter, making my painting area look so much larger.  I found mine at a popular on-line store called the TheWarStore.  I must say that these guys are damn good at customer relations since it was the best on-line experience I have ever had.  They also have bulk Green Stuff in tubes, eliminating contact curing between the blue and yellow parts.  There navigation buttons are easy to use and you should be able to find the trays and the green stuff without any problems.

November 21 2003
I have completed the build and sculpt of a new Lord of Change, the greater demon of Tzeench.  It can be found in the Sculpting Gallery along with discussion and painting plans.  Look for the finished version in both Gallery V and the Illumination Gallery in the coming week.

November 17 2003
Two new GW models in Gallery V.  They are both Blood Dragon Vampires, one on foot and one mounted.  The mounted vampire is a battle standard bearer with a sculpted banner depicting a coiled dragon.  I should have snapped a picture of the green for the Sculpting Gallery but I was too caught up in the model to remember.  Next time.

November 14 2003
I have added 2 new models to Gallery V.  The first is an Ultramarine custom special character named Romulus.  He was based on the Grey Knight Lord Stern and after a fair bit of putty work looks suitably like an Ultramarine.  The other model is the limited ed Dark Elf standard bearer with a magical standard that screams in agony and terror.

November 7 2003
The Inquisitor Eldar that I added to the sculpting gallery is now painted and in Gallery V.  He is a Harlequin and as such is very colourful, with lots of block colours and patterned cloth.

November 2 2003
I have a new model in both Gallery V and the Sculpting Gallery.  The painted model in Gallery V is an old Escher gang leader from Necromunda and the sculpted model is of a converted =I= Eldar Ranger.
On a side note, I have received a number of requests for the sculpting tool I used on Blotus.  I had to hunt the person down since the e-mail I had was not working.  I will be sending out his mail to those that asked soon.  Thanks for your patience.

October 24 2003
I have placed a crazy new Nurgle sculpt in the Sculpting Gallery.  Blotus the Glutton is a terminator lord based on an obliterator body so he is very large.  He is the same size as my GD model Putricus found in the 2003 Golden Demon Gallery.  I also did a fair amount of a write up for the model, well worth a look if you are interested in sculpting.

October 23 2003
I have added a highly converted Dark Emissary to Gallery V.  He has been painted and sculpted to look very dark and eerie looking.
I have added another new gallery.  The Sculpting Gallery is dedicated to sculpted models in their unpainted form.  This should help people to see what it is that I do when I alter a model with putty.  Some of these models appear in other galleries painted and some are test sculpts that I do not intend to paint.
I am done accepting contracts at this time.  Check back in December if you are interested in a model but missed these openings.

October 20 2003
Gallery V just keeps getting larger and larger.  The newest additions are a highly converted Grey Knight Terminator lord and Hirh-Karn, The Enraged from Rackham.  These new models can be found here.
While my schedule is filling up I am still accepting a few more contracts in this batch.  Look for some pretty crazy models in the coming months as some of the upcoming contract are very unique.

October 14 2003
I have added the Master of Carnage to Gallery V.  This model sees me further develop my technique of object source lighting.  I have also added a new gallery to the site that is dedicated to the effect of object source lighting.  The Illumination Gallery is a collection of all my models that display any part of the technique.  These include base source lighting, object source lighting and environmental source lighting.

October 7 2003
I have finally come to a point where I am accepting new contracts.  So, if you would like a model painted then send me an e-mail and I will see what I can do.  If you go to the Contract Work page you can see what my preferences are at the moment.  If you do not see something that interests you send me an e-mail anyway, you never know what might tweak my interest.

I have added new models to my For Sale Page.  They are the Imperial Guard Vulture attack craft, a massive ork warboss, a dwarven cleric, warrior bard and the Reaper knight with the glowing sword.

I have finished a Ragnar Blackmane conversion and pictures are up in Gallery V

October 3 2003

I have a bunch of new models in Gallery V.  I got on a serious roll and just couldn't take any time for pictures until today.  The models are mostly Confrontation [Vicaire of Dirz, Necromancer, Iron Priestess] with the 2002 GD Chaos model thrown in.  I have also finished the Eclipsante 2 [Devourer female with sword down] for a unique eBay event that will occur soon.  Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event I will have to hold the pictures but I will post them as soon as I am able.
I am now working on a couple of GW models, a Ragnar conversion and an Escher house leader conversion.

September 23 2003

Well, I have a few new models in Gallery V.  One is a dwarven cleric and the other a warhammer wielding bard from the Reaper Warlord range.  I have also put up greens of a Typhus conversion that was very cool to sculpt on.
I should have a number of new models for Gallery V in the coming week so check back.

September 9 2003

I have finished the female demon hunter for =I=.  She is a very unique model for me, utilizing colours I rarely if ever use.  Pictures of her can be found in Gallery V.
I was in Calgary, Canada the past few days checking out a new store that stocks GW, Reaper and Confrontation.  I picked up some very cool new Reaper Warlord models and am impressed by the quality of the sculpts.

August 29 2003

I have just finished painting the new Space Wolf Rune Priest and the 2003 GD Wolf Priest.  The models are both so big and burly that conveying the savageness of the models was easy.  I did sculpted rock bases for both and gave both models thunder hammers as well as their power weapons.  This gives the characters the most potential in HtH especially against dreadnoughts and vehicles.  Pics can be found in Gallery V.

I am working on the female inquisitor from Fanatic.  I have extensively reposed her and she is going to be my best =I= model to date.  Look for her soon.

I have noticed that my load time for Gallery V is 72 seconds with a 28.8 modem.  I would like to hear from those of you that look in from time to time regarding the time it takes to load the gallery.  If enough of you are still on dial-up and find this to be too long of a load time I will split Gallery V into two parts.

August 21 2003

The Vulture pics are now up in Gallery V

Today's update will be two parted.  The first part consists of  three models that can be found in Gallery V.   All three models are for D&D with appropriately painted magic items and gear.  Our party is now one model short of complete with the wizard being painted as I type this.  Coincidently, all the models have a lighting effect.  There are two weapon effects, a shield effect and one has the moon light efect.
The second part of the update, which will be later in the day, will be the Vulture attack craft from Forge World.  I am only waiting on the Plexiglas base and rod to be cut.  Once I have the base I will snap pics and have them up in Gallery V.  It turned out very well.  I have a playing base and a display type base for the model so check back for the images.

August 13 2003

Thanks to everyone that sent me an e-mail to fix the Hive Tyrant link in Gallery V.   I appreciate the info and have now corrected the problem.

August 11 2003

It seems like forever since I have update.  Once again I went off to war, SCA war that is.  We spent 3 days in the sweltering heat of a dry section of desert like pasture land.  It reached highs of 40c/104f and the dust was very bad.  The fighting was great and while I was hot in my plate mail it was not too bad since I stayed hydrated and soaked.  I spent the war wielding a 7' hammer, smashing our enemies on the head when the shield wall was engaged.

Other than that I have been very busy doing a bunch of new models.  I have two new additions to Gallery V and another to follow very soon.  The new additions are a Tyranid Hive Tyrant and a Forge World Nurgle Dreadnought.  The hive tyrant has some crazy pattern work and a unique pose while the dreadnought has a dynamic pose and a vast array of multi tonal blending.
I should have a Forge World Vulture attack craft done in a few days.  This baby is impressive and is going to be such a treat to paint.  Check back on the weekend to see if I am on target for completion.

I am sorry to say that Toronto is out of the picture for me this year.  I had so wanted to go but my obligations in the real world made this impractical and so I will have to put it off 'til next year.

Congrats to all the winners from Chicago GD.  The competition looks to have been very good.  A special congrats to Tim for finally winning the sword, it has been a long time in the making.

July 27 2003

I've added the 2001 GD Kroot Shaper to Gallery V.  The subtleness of the blends is somewhat lost under the semi-gloss spray but all in all the model turned out good.  Once the spray mellows it will look so much better.  I have also added some new pics in my Guest Gallery.  The new painter is Darcy Schiller who has been working with me for some time now.  I first showed him blending on my Prince Tyrion for GD 2002.  Both models are for D&D characters and both turned out well.  The Griffon commander is my paladin in Darcy's game and is painted just as my sheet describes him.  Check them out here.

July 18 2003

I've taken the last bit off from competition pieces to do some more Confrontation models that I have wanted to do for some time now.  The first is Asgarh of the Wolfen range and the second is the mounted  Red Lioness.  Both are great models and a nice break from the pieces I am taking to Toronto.  Pics can be found in Gallery V.  I have also added Shany's L'ombre, the limited ed Executioner from Confrontation to my For Sale page.
NOTE: My e-mail has changed and I am no longer able to check my old e-mail.  The new address is: minsp@miniaturespace.net .
If you have been trying to contact me in the past 2 weeks and have gotten no reply this is why.  In my computer/e-mail move I do not have the new address of the individual that contracted me to paint the 2001 GD Kroot.  Please e-mail me so I can get your new address.  Thanks.

July 11 2003

The devourers are now finished and pics are up in Gallery V.  Initially I didn't like the huge gorget that the Flesh Eaters have around their necks.  It is just so exaggerated.  They grew on me and the swirling patterns make the internal plates look much better.  Pics of the models can be found here.

July 10 2003

The devourers will be finished tomorrow.  They look very good IMHO.  They reflect my sharp style very nicely and were awesome to paint.  They took longer than I thought in part because they are so detailed but also because I have been busy doing real life things.  Tomorrow I will have pics up as well as a new model on the For Sale page.

July 4 2003

Now that I am going to be painting some non-GD models I should have new pics in Gallery V in a few days.  I am working on three devourers and the new wolfen leader.  All very cool models.  Once those are done I will be back into GD mode so I can have at least three entries done for Toronto.  Yes, I am planning on attending Toronto.  I figure that since I live in Canada I should make some effort to show up at one of the events.
I have added Zieren [from Gallery V] to my For Sale page.  I will be adding a few more in the coming weeks so check back frequently to see which ones.  One of them will be the Reaper Knight I keep getting so much mail about.

July 2 2003

I have finally updated my site with pictures and a recap of Baltimore Gamesday 2003.  Pictures and comments can be found in the Golden Demon section of the site.  Or you can click here to go there directly.  I am sorry it took so long to get this update uploaded but real life kinda stepped in.
I have received a number of e-mails consoling me about not winning the Sword.  While I appreciate the sentiment, I saw the winning model IRL, in hand, and it was fantastic.  It came down to an artistic decision for the judges and that is what art is about.  The subjectivity of art is what makes it exciting especially at the competition level.

June 25 2003

I am back from another successful trip to Baltimore.  I won a second place in 40K single, a 1st in 40K monster and a 1st in WHFB single.  I am sorry that I don't have any pictures up but I am moving as I type this and will need time to get everything in order.
All in all it was a great trip.  Meeting the painters is always a high point in my year and to see the models that won at dinner, close up, is a real treat.  I hope to have pictures up soon...within 10 days.  Thanks for your patience.

Thanks as well to all those people that have sent me thank you e-mails and notes.  I appreciate it. :)

June 17 2003

I am done with my Baltimore GD entries and am taking some time to relax.  I have been doing trail riding on horses, reading, playing on the beach in the sun [yes, it gets sunny in Canada :)].  I leave on Thursday 7:00 AM PST and arrive in Baltimore at 10:30 EST, yuck!  Gonna be a whirlwind trip for sure.

My e-mail has changed.  It is now minsp@miniaturespace.net I will be sending all my regular clients and correspondents a note to this effect when I get back.  The old e-mail will continue to work for a few more weeks, but I will be checking the new one more often.

May 30 2003

I am still working on GD models...seems like the models are taking longer this year.  I am trying different colour usage, patterns and effects and while it is going well it is time consuming.  I decided only a few days ago not to go to LAGD.  While it is somewhere I would like to go next year I was just not ready for the event this year.  So, I am going to Baltimore for sure and as my first show I will have an onslaught of models.
As for the LA competition, I wish all the painters the best and may the best painter win. :)  I look forward to seeing what people are doing this year when the results go on-line.

May 10 2003

I have had three figures finished for some time mow.  The first is Tanith, a limited ed figure from Rackham posed on a cool base.  Then there is a conversion between a Confrontation figure and some GW bitz.  Lastly there is a Nurgle lord.  They are now up in Gallery V.  I am deep into my Gamesday models.  I currently have 20 hours into a historical style base for one of my entries.  It is completely sculpted and now that it is finished it looks like it is a real piece of terrain.  This model is to be my best model to date from a sculpting, composition and painting standpoint.  That being said, this update will be the last one with pictures for some time.  I may put up updates on GD model progress but I get so involved I barely remember to sleep. :)

April 14 2003

I have been painting like a mad man in the past few days.  Seems time just slips by and I have a few new models to show.  I have Zieren, a devourer Wolfen from Confrontation, 2 Executioners from Confrontation and 3 snipers from GW.  Worth a look for sure.  They can all be found in Gallery V.

April 4 2003

My Confrontation quest continues and while it is slower going than I had thought Wolfen sure are cool.  They have so much detail and the poses are all so organic that they entice me to spend hours more than normal to really bring them to life.  I have finished the Wolfen Vastal and Kalyar the Awakened.  Both have scenic bases that really make the model seem alive.  They can both be found in Gallery V.

March 29 2003

I have finished the Ltd Ed Wolfen, Ashan'tyr.  I have been lead to believe that only 5,000 of these models were made [same for all Ltd releases from Rackham].  I was happy to get my hands on one and it is the first Wolfen I have painted.  She can be found in Gallery V.  Look for more Wolfen soon.

March 28 2003

I have been just inundated with mail about contracts and would like to thank everyone for their interest.  While I do have some figures left on my list, I am at this time no longer accepting contracts until after Gamesday [end of June].  If you can wait 'til July then send your requests along.

March 26 2003

I have just updated the Contract section of my site.  I have a list of single figures I would like to do and have in the pipeline.  If you are interested in any of them or have a single figure you would like me to do send me an e-mail.

March 25 2003

I have just finished three new pre-release models from GW.  Grey Knight Captain Stern, Grey Knight in Terminator armour with incinerator and Grey Knight in power armour with psycannon.  They can been seen in Gallery V.

March 19 2003

I have some pretty sweet models to show.  The first on is the new Tomb Queen from GW which is a fantastic model.  The other two are Confrontation models, Sered the Templar Commander and the Ltd Ed. Shany's L'ombre.  The models can be found in Gallery V.
My local RTT store now has all the Reaper Warlord line, about 200 codes of other Reaper models, and the entire range of Confrontation.  They got the Confrontation models in a few days ago and I went and picked up what I wanted immediately.  There are a number of models I have not seen on the net yet which was cool.  I have about 12 more Confrontation models in the pipe that will be amazing to put paint on.  Check back regularly
'cause I'm gonna go on a tear!

March 15 2003

The Heresy Nether Demon is in the house.  It was a very cool painting experience and the effect I tried to achieve worked out very well.  I have done a pretty extensive write up with the model so check it out in Gallery V.

March 3 2003

All is well with my eye.  It is fully healed and while it will be a few more days 'til I paint again and even then only in short time spans I am very happy that the entire eye thing is almost over.  It has now been exactly one year since my first surgery and I have had 18+ eye exams in that time.  The left eye, which was recorrected in September is now 20/20 with no correction.  The right eye that they just did is now a +2 but will heal back to a +0 or close to it in a month or so.  Thanks to everyone that sent me a get well e-mail, I appreciate it.
For those of you considering eye surgery I would highly recommend it.  I was in the rare minority, needing recorrections for both eyes, but that was because my eyes were so bad to begin with.  There is very little pain, infact it was more of a discomfort than pain, and that only lasts for a few days.  I hope to have pics of some models up in a week or so. :)  'til then take care.

February 13 2003

I guess I was wrong about the 8th being my last update...while I have no pics this time I have some things to type.  I received the Nether Demon from Heresy a few days ago.  What a great model!  It comes in, like, 26 pieces and while the casting is good it still requires a fair amount of sculpting to make it an attractive package.  It is 120mm tall and that is over 2x as tall as a Blood Thirster.  I am putting on the wings from the GW Balrog and they look perfect.  I hope to have pics up before I leave for surgery and if not I hope to have them up soon after I get back.

February 8 2003

This is going to be the last update for upwards of three weeks.  I am starting another demon project and I go for my last laser correction surgery on the 15th.  I guess I should have paced out the models during my 'down time' but I was excited to get the images on my site.  This time I have the Blood Dragon Vampire count I mentioned a few updates ago and an ork warboss for WHFB.  They are in Gallery V

February 4 2003

Well this has got to be the most updating the site has ever seen.  My finger is now 100% [99% of the time] and I have been able to really focus on painting.  I have added four new figures to Gallery V and they are all a bit unique.  Each sees me working on a new [for me] style element or advancing one I am sort of comfortable with.  My goal in the next bit is to do figures with interesting effects and colour pallets.  I am forcing myself to improve by not doing the same old thing.  While this can be frustrating it is also one of the best ways to improve [besides watching an experienced painter I can think of no other way to really improve in leaps and bounds].
So, the figures I have are the new Emperor's Champion as mentioned below in the Feb.1 update.  I have also done a Warlord Reaper model [my first reaper model], and 2 Confrontation models.  Take a look in Gallery V.

February 1 2003
>>>MAJOR UPDATE<<<

The reason for the lack of updates the past 2 weeks is because I was unable to transfer pictures between my camera and the computer.  I still can't but I went out and purchased a card reader and it works great!  So, I can now finally share some of the work I have been doing.  I finished a new possessed model for the Mordheim band, The Hand of Fate, from 2002.  I also finished another Mordheim warband, but this time it was the race of Dark Elves.  I also have pics of a High Elf hero on a steed and a Confrontation Wizard.  I also did a Blood Dragon Vampire Count for a friend in Vancouver but pics will have to wait 'til I can find out the colour of his bases.  I am also a banner away from finishing the new Emperor's Champion.  Check back in a few days to see him.  The pics for the above update can be found in Gallery V.

January 14 2003

Well, I have finished the other =I= figure I got from the UK.  The Chaos magus in power armour.  He could just as easily be an inquisitor that has stepped over the line and embraced the dark powers.  It was a learning experience in many ways as I tried a couple of new things.  Check it out in Gallery V.

January 4 2003

Happy New Year to everyone.  I have been pretty busy building this and painting that.  Gallery V has now been added for 2003 on the left side of the page.  It is ironic that the first model in the gallery should be an =I= figure, just as it was in 2002.  It is the Eldar Pathfinder.  I picked the model up in the UK and I am under the assumption it is still not available in North America.  It has got to be one of my favorite all around figures for style.

Oh, and on a side note take a look at the =I= Genestealer in Gallery III.  Is it me or does it look an awful bit like the one that is in the new WD?  I know there are only so many variations that can be done but it sure looks close to me. :)
